As mentioned in the previous newsletter, Sheri Atwater has been hired by the Hermosa Beach School Board. The school board has not made her curriculum public.
She may start initially working solely with teachers, but do not think that this will not affect all curriculum. That is only the beginning of her quest to reform education in Hermosa Beach, starting with children in Kindergarten.

The community should demand transparency. Please provide an ecomment and express your concerns about their lack of transparency.

I have watched Sheri Atwater at previous meetings and am very concerned about her point of view that if someone is not a racist, they are a liar. Those comments are highly offensive and the idea that she would be educating teachers about the proper way to teach is of concern to me and my family.
I have read some of her published literature, and she writes extensively about “white privilege” “implicit biases” and decries the “male patriarchy”. I have a son and am concerned that a woman with her mindset would train teachers on how to talk to boys.
The concept of white privilege is offensive to me. What gives her the right to judge me or my children based upon the color of our skin? She does not know the challenges I have encountered in my life. If I worked hard, studied hard, went to graduate school so I could afford to live in Hermosa Beach, why should I apologize for my decisions? Does she consider me a racist purely due to the color of my skin?
All of her curriculum and/or discussion items with the teachers should be made public to all parents, before she begins talking to teachers about her philosophy and program. If you feel so strongly that she is needed, then you should have no problems making her documents and plans completely available for public review. If, on the other hand, you hide everything, then you must instinctively know that the community will be unhappy with your decision, which would beg the question – why are you doing this?
You talk about needing enrollment to increase and your desire to have the community approve a parcel tax. You need to listen to the community when we express concerns about the consultant you hired.
We deserve transparency, not just a discussion in which you approve her and agree with everything she intends to do.
We have STRENGTH in numbers, and TOGETHER we can be a force that pushes back against these changes and instead pushes for EXCELLENCE and an APOLITICAL educational environment that allows students to develop critical thinking skills, the ability to debate varying points of view and above all, continue to strive for excellence in education.
